Singular Signage

One of Indiana’s lesser-known claims to fame sits on grocery store shelves and in homes across America: Clabber Girl Baking Powder. Based in Terre Haute, this iconic brand has earned the loyalty of bakers everywhere, doing its home state proud and maintaining its spot as the top-selling baking powder in the United States.

If you’ve ever traveled along U.S. 40, chances are you’ve seen the 44-foot-long Clabber Girl billboard. In its heyday, the sign was a vibrant yellow with bold red letters and a large clock on top, but over time, the billboard suffered significant wear and tear.

In 2018, the Clabber Girl Corporation partnered with the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to restore the sign to its former glory. Not only were the colors restored to their full saturation, but the wooden frame was improved, the clock mechanics were repaired and the surrounding trees were trimmed to give wide clearance for optimal viewing.

Next time you take a road trip, keep an eye out for the bright yellow sign! Nowadays, you can’t miss it.
