Summer Sangria Recipes

Indiana wines

Sweet tea and lemonade will always be summertime favorites, but sangria is showing up more and more at every seasonal event, from picnics and barbecues to family reunions and wedding receptions. This wine-based beverage, originally from Spain and Portugal, has become a celebration favorite most likely because it adds fun and flair – and it tastes amazing. It’s extremely versatile, since any wine can be used. Any one of Indiana's locally produced, award-winning wines is perfect for sangria.

Wine All You Want

• For a guide to all the wines, wineries and wine-related events in Indiana, visit indianawines.org.
• Refrigerating sangria before serving allows the flavors to “steep,” which is basically soaking the fruits until the flavors are infused into the liquid.
• Make any sangria alcohol-free by substituting sparkling grape juice or fruit juices for the wine.
• Traminette is Indiana’s signature wine. This white wine is a cross between two grapes, Joannes Seyve 23.416 and Gewurztraminer. It shows floral and spicy characteristics.

Sangria is traditionally made with red wine, fruit juices, fresh fruit, soda water, and sometimes additional liqueurs, brandy or cognac. Sangria blanco uses white wine instead of red. Indiana offers so many delicious wines that you could use a different one to create a new sangria recipe every week of summer and still not come close to enjoying all of them.

Sangria’s versatility shines by simply changing the wine, fruits, fruit juice and/or sweetener ingredients. If you don't like sipping something so sweet, try adding fresh herbs for an earthy, complex taste.

All Indiana wine-based sangrias get a gold star from this dietitian because wine contains many health benefits, and the additional fruits and fruit juices add even more nutrients. I like to keep calories in check by using wine only, with no additional alcoholic beverages or liqueurs.

I’d love to hear about your favorite sangria creation. In between your summertime sips, take a moment and share your recipe or comments below. Cheers!
