Myth: Eating red meat and processed meat is detrimental to your health.

Fact #1: That myth is overstated and oversimplified. Red meat, such as beef and pork, is incredibly nutrient-rich with powerful protein, vitamins such as B-12 (found only in animal foods) and essential minerals such as zinc, iron, potassium, phosphorus and more. Emerging science is showing that eating 20 to 30 grams of protein at every meal, every day promotes optimal muscle repair and growth, especially as we age. Three ounces of cooked red meat provides about 20 to 25 grams protein. Just make sure you’re choosing the leanest cuts of beef and pork as often as possible for optimal heart health. Check out IndianaBeef.org for a list of more than 30 lean beef cuts and IndianaPork.com for the seven lean cuts of pork. Hint: Look for cuts with the word “loin” in the description.

Fact #2: As for the processed meat, you already know this dietitian’s tip! Eating huge amounts day in and day out of anything, including processed meats, wouldn’t be the smartest, most balanced health habit. So just remember to enjoy processed meats in moderation. Pay attention to how much and how often. And enjoy and savor every bite!
